Chlamydia and Pregnancy

Chlamydia is a silent Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD) so many people are totally unaware they might have it. Having Chlamydia while you are trying to conceive will not affect you actually being able to get pregnant but from not knowingly having Chlamydia you might find out you will have problems caused by having the infection could make it much harder to actually conceive.

Studies have shown that the most common STD’s found in pregnant and none pregnant women are;

  • Vaginal Vaginosis
  • Herpes – Genital
  • Chlamydia

The problem is that since the disease takes a long time to appear in woman, it is too late to treat the organs that have already been damaged from the Chlamydia infection. Chlamydia is significant to why women have “Pelvic Inflammation Disease” (PID). This disease is a serious infection of the reproductive organs. The bacteria can infect the cervix, fallopian tubes, and urine canal in women. PID can cause scarring of the fallopian tubes, which can block the tubes and prevent fertilization from taking place.Fertilization cannot take place when a woman’s reproduction system is damaged. A woman could then face the hardships of either not being able to have a baby or have to look at expensive forms of fertility treatment.

Up to 40 percent of women with untreated Chlamydia infections who aren't pregnant end up with PID. (It's possible to get PID during pregnancy, but it happens only rarely.) Symptoms of PID include pain in your lower abdomen or back, pain during sex, vaginal bleeding, fever, and nausea. PID can result in permanent damage to your fallopian tubes, and lead to chronic pelvic pain and infertility and an increased risk of ectopic pregnancy if you do become pregnant.

A baby who is exposed to Chlamydia trachomatis bacteria in the birth canal during delivery may develop an eye infection or pneumonia. Symptoms of conjunctivitis, which include discharge and swollen eyelids, usually develop within the first 10 days of life.

Symptoms of pneumonia, including a cough that gets steadily worse and congestion, most often develop within 3 to 6 weeks after birth. Healthcare providers can treat both conditions successfully with antibiotics.

In America because of these risks to the newborn, many providers recommend that all pregnant women get tested for Chlamydia as part of their prenatal care. In fact, between 20% and 50% of babies born to infected mothers will contract an infection.

Can a pregnant woman be tested for Chlamydia during the pregnancy?

YES....! The testing of Chlamydia is generally carried out by using a urine sample which you provide either at your local Gum clinic or in the comfort of your own home using a private laboratory testing kit. The standard method for curing the infection is to have a course of antibiotics for either a 7 or 14 day period depending on the strength of the antibiotics.

How do I choose which combination of Ovulation/Pregnancy tests to have?

Very simple - just buy the item and go through to check-out in the normal way. When you fill in your name address details and you scroll down to the payment options you will see a further information box. This is where you need to tell us your combination here. Alternatively you can always send us a message by return email from your order confirmation. Simply tell us the combination you want - 20 pregnancy tests, or 20 ovulation tests, or 5 pregnancy tests + 15 ovulation tests etc. The only condition is that the combination can't be more than 20.

What if I forget to tell you the combination I want?

If you forget to tell us the combination you want then we will send you 10 ovulation tests and 10 pregnancy tests. So if this is not what you want then make sure you tell us what you do want before we despatch your order.

What is ovulation and the process of conception?

As the saying goes a picture is worth a thousand words so we have included a short video (don’t forget to turn the sound up) which we feel gives an excellent short description of ovulation, including the whole process of conception (fertilisation and implantation) from the release of the egg from the ovary right up to the implantation of the fertilised egg at which point pregnancy has occurred, HCG is produced and the embryo starts to grow. If you have problems viewing the video or have a slow internet connection wait until the video is fully buffered before playing the entire video - i.e press pause once the video starts loading and wait until loading is complete before pressing play.

How exactly do you measure a menstrual cycle?

Very simply a menstrual cycle defined as starting on the day of first bleed to the start of your next bleed. So CD12 would be Cycle Day 12 of your cycle and would be 12 days after you first started your period.

What do you mean by a Fertilityplan chart?

Basically if you are trying for a baby then you need to do a few very simple things to try and ensure you get pregnant as soon as possible. The Fertilityplan chart just really summarises what you notice about your body during your cycle and when these changes are charted and combined with other help such as ovulation tests and temperature changes you can more easily pinpoint when you are ovulating. We provide a chart you can print out and use for free - see below.

Why should I keep a Fertilityplan chart?

There is only a very small window within each cycle when your body releases an egg. This window, which may last only 36 hours, is the only time you can get pregnant during that cycle so knowing how to pinpoint the timing when the egg is released can be very important.

How does a basal digital thermometer help?

Basically there is a slight temperature drop just before ovulation occurs and then a distinct temperature rise of about 0.40 to 1.0 degrees Fahrenheit after ovulation takes place. By plotting your temperature change during your cycle you will know when you have ovulated.

Why a Fahrenheit thermometer and why do I need it to be to 2 decimal places?

Firstly we supply a Fahrenheit thermometer rather than a Centigrade one for 2 reasons. Firstly if we supplied a Centigrade thermometer then the temperature change would only be about 0.2 of a degree say from 35.0 to 35.2 so identifying any change can be difficult. On our Farenheit thermometer it will show a move from about 97.8 degree to 98.4 degrees so the timing of ovulation is easier to spot. Additionally this thermometer can also be used to check if you/your family have a temperature and it is easy to identify as it is generally known that in Fahrenheit a temperature of over 100.0 signifies a problem or infection.
The reason for 2 decimal places is also to help identify the time of ovulation more easily. Most thermometers measure to just one decimal place so if a Fahrenheit thermometer it would read 96.8 or 97.2. However our thermometer will read 96.77 0r 97.24 so it makes spotting the time of ovulation easier especially if you also use ovulation tests.

But don’t I need to know before I ovulate not after?

Yes, that is why we recommend that this digital basal thermometer is used in conjunction with ovulation tests. Additionally the completion of the Fertilityplan chart will also help identify ovulation timing by noting bodily changes too.

When should I take my temperature?

You should take your temperature, orally under the tongue, every morning before you do anything else - even before you get up!!  Just the act of getting up increases body temperature so keep the thermometer right by the bed. You should then write down the temperature recorded. The temperature rise (spike) takes place shortly after ovulation and will stay slightly elevated until you start your next period.

What other bodily changes should I look for to know when I am about to ovulate?

The consistency of cervical mucus changes throughout the menstrual cycle. Usually after you finish your bleed you will have 3/4 days when you have dry days. The wetness then increases daily usually lasting about 9 days at which point the mucus will become plentiful, slippery, clear and stretchy. The best comparison is that it is like egg whites and at this point it is a good sign that ovulation will occur in the next couple of days. After ovulation occurs the mucus will again become more sticky less stretchy and then dryer again.

How do I get this Fertilityplan chart and what does it look like?

Very simply we will email one to you free of charge when you purchase a digital thermometer from us. You can then use it on your computer or simply print it out and use it every month. When completed it will look something like this for a typical month:-

fertilityplan chart - small

The red line indicates the normal basal body temperature for a woman before getting up - about 0.8 degrees Fahrenheit below normal body temperature during the day. The dots represent the daily recorded temperature and you just connect the dots each day with a line to join them. Other information is added such as the results of the ovulation tests, condition of your cervical mucus and days when intercourse took place, etc.

Ok, what about the thermometer itself?

The thermometer itself is a straightforward Farenheit digital thermometer which can be used under the armpit, orally or rectally. It is self correcting and reads your temperature in under 2 minutes and automatically beeps when you can read the temperature. It comes complete with button cell type battery and we can provide replacement batteries, if required. The battery life is usually 2 years but less if used every day. The unit should be switched off once the reading is taken but will switch off automatically after 10 minutes if no button is pressed. The thermometer is fully CE approved as are all the items we sell.

How do ovulation tests work then?

When a woman is about to ovulate, her body releases a large amount of a hormone called LH (Luteinising Hormone). LH is always present in your urine but the levels increase (surge) in the middle of your cycle, causing you to release an egg from the ovary. This process is called ovulation. If the LH surge is present, ovulation is likely to occur in the next 12 to 36 hours. Once ovulation takes place the level of Progesterone increases and this causes the temperature rise. This timing will last 14 days exactly so if your period begins consistently below 10 days after ovulation takes place then you should see your doctor to have your Progesterone levels checked as this is a known cause of infertility.

Why don’t I only use ovulation tests then?

Every woman can be and is, different. Whilst some women have very regular cycles with perfect LH surges just before they ovulate there are other women who can have their surge within just a few hours and the ovulation tests can miss it. On the other hand some women have a long build up to their surge and then fade slowly over several days so pinpointing exactly when the surge occurred can be difficult. For many of these women using the ovulation tests together with the digital thermometer and physical signs can help determine exactly when ovulation does occur.

What does this mIU stuff all mean anyway?

In its simplest terms the numbers (e.g. 20 mIU) are just a standardised measurement system that detects the ovulation hormone present in your body. The lower the number the higher the sensitivity. The higher the sensitivity the earlier you will detect if you are about to ovulate. As far as we know these 20mIU tests are the most sensitive urine tests available from any manufacturer and are made exclusively for us.

How good are these tests and what is the expiry date going to be?

We now sell literally millions of these tests in the UK and throughout the world - they are made specifically for us and comply with CE (European Community) and FDA (United States) rules and regulations and every pack has the approval details printed on them. We sell them to some of the largest organisations such as the UK National Health Service (NHS). The tests we supply to the NHS are identical to the ones we sell to you and every batch is checked religiously for quality and accuracy - they are more than 99% accurate. As for the expiry dates, they will always be at least 1 year away and more often nearly 2 years (which is the legal maximum).

How does a home ovulation test work and what is the LH surge?

A pregnancy begins with conception. A child is conceived when the male sperm successfully fertilises the female egg. Successful fertilisation is most likely during a 12-36 hour period following the LH surge. Since this window is usually only open once a month and for a short period of time, being able to predict the LH surge is very helpful when trying to become pregnant.

These ovulation tests detect the LH surge by measuring the amount of LH in urine.

When should I do the test?

To determine when to begin testing, you need to work out the length of your menstrual cycle. The length of your cycle is from the first day of your period to the last day before your next period starts (count the first day of bleeding as cycle day 1). Calculate what the usual length of your menstrual cycle has been the last few months. Once you have worked out the average length of your cycle you can refer to the chart that is included with our ovulation tests which clearly and simply shows on which day of your menstrual cycle you should begin testing - you can then mark the results of the tests on your Fertilityplan chart.

Why should I avoid testing first thing in the morning?

You should avoid testing your urine first thing in the morning as LH is synthesized in your body early in the morning. It will not show up in your urine until later in the day.

What does the test result look like?

When the LH surge is present the "Test" line (lower of the two lines in the white area) will be almost as dark or darker than the "Control" line (upper line in the white area).

Once I receive a positive result, when is the best time to have intercourse?

Ovulation usually follows the start of the LH surge within 12-36 hours. This is the time when you are at your most fertile, therefore you should have intercourse during this time.

How long will it take before I can read the result?

A positive result can often be read in under 40 seconds but to confirm a negative result (no test line or the test line is much fainter than the control line) you should wait the full 10 minutes.

What happens if after using the tests provided I have still not detected my LH surge?

Most women with regular cycles will detect their LH Surge in 5 days or under. However, if you have irregular cycles you may need to test for longer and may require additional ovulation tests to detect your LH Surge. Also see the section below regarding different sensitivities of our ovulation tests.

I have recently come off the contraceptive pill. Will this affect my result?

As the pill disrupts your natural hormone balance it may take a few months for your periods to return to normal. You may want to wait until you have had 2 normal periods before starting to use ovulation tests. Please be aware that pregnancy and breastfeeding can affect the results of any ovulation test.

Will alcohol or other common medications affect the results of this test?

No, but you should consult your doctor if you are taking any hormonal treatments.

Can I use the ovulation test for contraception?

No, the test is not designed to prevent conception. As sperm can survive for 72 hours you might still become pregnant if you had intercourse before you detected your LH Surge and also because some woman can and do ovulate more than once in the same cycle.

What about the sensitivity of these ovulation tests and why is Ultra Early important?

Ok, we are going to dispel a few old wives’ tales here and give you some facts:-

Firstly, virtually every woman in the world will ovulate almost exactly 14 days BEFORE she starts her period – not the other way round!! That's fine for women with regular cycles of 26-30 days between each period but the trouble is a lot of women have irregular periods or other conditions such as PCOS, a lazy ovary, previous miscarriages, endometriosis, currently breast feeding etc., etc.

So what exactly happens is this:-

In any one cycle and on average, 80% of women will ovulate normally but around 11% of women will not ovulate at all and another 9% will ovulate twice or more. The latter explains a lot of those unwanted pregnancies by Roman Catholics trusting to the "rhythm method" to prevent conception!!

Now the “average” woman ............is there such a thing? will have an LH (the hormone that triggers ovulation) level of between 5-20 mIU in her system. When the surge occurs the basal level rises to approximately 50-200 mIU and at this level ovulation occurs and the egg is released from the ovary. This means that for most women the standard 30 mIU ovulation sensitivity tests that we and others sell are fine.

However, we have discovered that sometimes that ovulation surge can start and finish in just a few hours and some women ovulate normally but at levels which are very low indeed so these more sensitive Ultra Early 20 mIU ovulation tests will ensure that when the LH surge occurs you will pick it up. If you want/need the more standard 30 mIU LH sensitivity tests or even the least sensitive 40 mIU LH tests we are happy to send these instead - just send us a message with your order.

How dark does the test line need to be to show I am ovulating normally and what if I get no lines in the test window?

Essentially if you get no lines at all in the test window then you either haven't ovulated yet or even this test is not sensitive enough to pick up the LH surge. At this Ultra Early sensitivity level if you get no test lines followed by faint lines for a couple of days which then fade back to no lines then that is the perfect indication that you have ovulated normally during those days. If, however, you get no lines at all in the test window with this highest sensitivity 20 mIU test (as far as we know, no one in the world does a more sensitive ovulation urine test) for 2 months then you should contact us for advice as we may be able to help. The email address is shown below.

I had a positive result for the LH surge and had sexual intercourse during this period so why have I not become pregnant?

There are many factors that can affect your fertility. It can take many healthy couples months to achieve pregnancy. You may need to use these tests for a few months before pregnancy occurs. If after 6 months of trying you have still not become pregnant, you should visit your doctor for advice.

What is the "fertility pill" and how does it affect your ovulation tests?

Clomid/Serophene are brand names for a drug known as Clomiphene citrate - commonly referred to as the "fertility pill". Letrozole is a very similar drug and works in exactly the same way. They are the most popular and most prescribed drugs for women who are not ovulating at all, have PCOS or suffer from irregular periods. They have proved very successful with 60-80% of women ovulating normally when taking the drugs and with 50% of those on these drugs going on to get pregnant. They have few side effects and these are generally minor - your doctor can tell you more.

All these drugs are taken for 5 days (days 3-7 or 5-9 of your cycle) and are essentially a boost to your fertility hormones including LH. For this reason, if you are on any of these drugs, you should start to use these highest sensitivity (20mIU) ovulation tests 3 days after finishing the drugs i.e. on day 10 or day 12 onwards as before this you could get a false result.

One Step Pregnancy Tests

Whether you are trying to get pregnant or trying to keep from getting pregnant, you want to know immediately if you are pregnant or not. The pregnancy tests that we offer are fast, accurate, reliable and an easy alternative when you require immediate and discreet results in the privacy of your own home.

How does a pregnancy test work?

A pregnancy test measures the presence of the hormone Human Chorionic Gonadotrophin (HCG) in your urine. HCG is produced in the placenta shortly after the embryo attaches to the uterine lining. This hormone then builds up rapidly in your body in the days following successful conception.

When should I do the test?

The test can be taken at any time of the day. However, we do recommend that you test first thing in the morning when your urine is most concentrated. Do not drink large amounts of fluid in an attempt to increase the volume of urine as this may dilute the urine making HCG more difficult to detect.

How long will it take before I can read the result?

You can read the results in under 5 minutes and a positive result can often be seen in under 30 seconds.

What is the difference between home tests and those done by a doctor?

Many doctors and clinics use our pregnancy tests anyway (we supply the whole of the NHS), in which case they are exactly the same. Occasionally, some women may be given a blood test, but they aren’t very different from our pregnancy tests either as both types look for the presence of HCG in your body.

What should I do with my results?

If your pregnancy test results are positive, you should consult your doctor to discuss your pregnancy and what steps and precautions should be taken next. In addition, if your test is negative and you still suspect you may be pregnant, you may want to confirm your test results with another pregnancy test a few days later.

If I see 2 lines but one is fainter than the other is this a positive result?

Yes, if 2 lines appear you are pregnant no matter how faint the lines appear.

Can anything affect the results of these tests?

Drinking alcohol, painkillers, oral contraceptives, antibiotics and other common drugs will not affect the result of these tests. Only medicines that contain HCG can produce a false positive result. If you are unsure about your result or your period has still not arrived you should see your doctor for advice.

What are 10 mIU Ultra Early pregnancy tests and what does it all mean?

It is unfortunate that some eBay sellers claim their tests are ultra early and 10 mIU when they are not. Basically if the outer foil doesn't indicate 10 mIU then they are NOT the Ultra Early highest sensitivity pregnancy tests. We send out the Ultra Early 10 mIU tests as a standard. The number given after the Lot number (-10 or -25) indicates the sensitivity of our tests. Some women on hormone treatments containing HCG may require tests with the lower 25 mIU sensitivity and for those women we will happily send you 25 mIU sensitivity tests - just let us know in the "notes to seller".

A 10 mIU pregnancy test will show a faint line at a level of 10 mIU of HCG (the hormone that is produced in large amounts when you are pregnant). A normal non-pregnant woman is at a level of 5 mIU or less and from the first day of becoming pregnant the level of HCG doubles every day for the first 3 months until the level is at several hundred thousand. The average woman could, therefore, show a faint line only 1 day after conception but if the level started at 1 mIU then it would be 3 days after conception that the line would show. Accordingly it can vary from person to person and the actual day of conception in the cycle can vary slightly depending on the day the egg was released from the ovary, the day it was fertilised and the day the egg implanted. Normally we would say that these tests would be certain to show a positive result 6 days after conception. On the 7th day the line would be much darker and so on. Having said that we have had women say they showed positive after only 2 days!! The risk of testing too early being that the test could be a 'chemical pregnancy' as the fertilised egg may fail and turn out to be just a heavier period than normal. Experts estimate that up to 50% of all pregnancies end in a miscarriage and many of these manifest themselves as slightly later or heavier periods.

Pregnancy & Ovulation Tests

Review 1

I just wanted to thank you for such exceptional service. After I used your ovulation tests - I fell pregnant the same month that the tests predicted ovulation. It taken us 1 1/2 years before our second pregnancy. It just proves that these tests really do help a lot! Many thanks.

Review 2

I purchased some pregnancy tests from you and I just wanted to let you know that I detected a positive result 5 days before period was due, so they do work the way they say! Kind Regards.

Review 3

Fast delivery, pregnancy and ovulation kits worked great, got pregnant in 2 weeks and pregnancy confirmed by my doctor.

Strep B Test

Just to say thank you, your fast response is incredible, we are so impressed as we only posted the test yesterday, not only that but the doctor has already called us following your call, what amazes us is that with out this test our baby could have been at risk yet the NHS refuse to test. We would certainly use yourselves again and wish to pass on our appreciation for an excellent service, that could potentially have saved our babies life.

Thanks to the last test I bought from you, I have found that my little girl has many intolerances which explains her severe stomach pains, wind, constipation and possibly many of her other ailments, so now wish to test for further intolerances which is why I'm purchasing another bigger test. Thank you so much.
